Sirius7 was commissioned to undertake a project to look at travel patterns of learners, within London. Our partner was the University of Brighton. The LSCs wanted to understand the drivers influencing learners who, in many cases, travelled large distances to attend London-based colleges.
We subsequently undertook work with London West LSC looking at the influences of participation especially delivery locations and areas of disadvantage. The work involved area (by London Borough) local (by ward) and detailed (by COA and SOA) analysis and mapping. The maps were iterated with the location of provision. The project helped inform the LSC of the link between areas of local disadvantage (using the 2004 Indices of Multiple Deprivation), areas of high and low participation (using 2001 Census Data) and delivery locations (using ILR and other data).
At the lowest level, the thematic maps and locations of delivery were overlaid onto Ordnance Survey Maps.
The project highlighted areas of low take-up, pockets of deprivation covering just a few streets, and the number and venues of delivery point such as libraries, school and community venues.
