Indices of Multiple Deprivation

The Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) is a measure of multiple deprivation at Super Output Area (SOA) level. The model of multiple deprivation which underpins the IMD is based on the idea of distinct dimensions of deprivation which can be recognised and measured separately.

Sirius7 has been working with the IMD since its release in 2004.

The 2007 IMD

Released on the 6th December 2007 by the Department of Communities and Local Government, the 2007 IMD is currently the most recent version available.

The subdomains such as Overall IMD, Crime, and Education Skills & Training remain the same as in the 2004 IMD, therefore change over this time period can be analysed. This is shown by the map PDFs available to download on the right, which show the Rank of Overall IMD for 2004 / 2007, and the change between the two. In some cases this change has been quite significant, with Districts falling up to 86 places (worse) or climbing up to 55 places (better.)

Why IMD 2004?

Why should I be using the 2004 IMD?

  • Postcode uplift will be based on this data from 2007 onwards
  • This data is being used by all Government departments
  • Your Provider factor for 2007 onwards will take into account numbers of learners claiming
  • This dataset is the most up to date information regarding local deprivation

IMD 2004 vs IMD 2000

There are many key differences between the 2004 Indices of Multiple Deprivation and the 2000 Index of Multiple Deprivation.

  • The 2004 IMD is based on Super Output Areas (SOAs) NOT Local Authority Wards. This means that the data is much more focused, as it is based on much smaller geographical areas
  • The 2004 IMD dataset can be used by individual domains (Education/Income/Crime etc) unlike the 2000 IMD
  • This data is already being used by all other Government departments when looking at deprivation
